Frequently Asked Questions

Can I trust the gardeners?

We review each profile that gets published for completeness and authenticity. Many gardeners have years of experience and/or professional certifications which are detailed in their profiles. You'll also message with gardeners before they arrive at your property, and some gardeners even offer initial virtual consultations.

How is this different than a landscaping company?

Hire a gardener on GardenerMatch for plant expertise. Unlike many landscaping companies, our gardeners prioritize individual plant care and long-term nurturing. They are passionate about cultivating healthy ecosystems, whether it's a vegetable garden or a native habitat. Our gig-based model also means you’ll get more affordable and flexible yard care.

What happens when I request a gardener?

We email them your project details and contact info. They’ll email you (from their email address, not a GardenerMatch address) to accept or reject your request. Most gardeners respond in 1-5 business days. If you don't hear back in that time, you can request another gardener or email hi@gardenermatch.com for help.

How much does it cost?

Gardeners set their own hourly rates at less than you'd pay a landscaping company. On average, folks charge $18–25/hr. There's no commitment—you can book them once for an hour or repeatedly, and pay however you like (Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, cash, etc.). Gardeners send us a 10% platform fee once a project is complete.

What types of projects are good for gardeners on GardenerMatch?

Our gardeners "know their plants" and are dedicated to increasing biodiversity and ecological gardening practices. They are skilled in various types of gardens, including food, flower, container, and decorative gardens, and can help with design or maintenance. GardenerMatch does not service grass lawn care or hardscaping projects.

What locations does GardenerMatch serve?

After a successful pilot in Chicago, we've expanded to other areas of the US! Our focus is signing up new gardeners, so geographic regions may seem random for a while. Have an idea for where we can expand next? Email your ideas to hi@gardenermatch.com.

What if the gardener doesn't do a good job?

If this is the case, please email hi@gardenermatch.com and we’ll do our best to remedy the issue. We’re a small team with a big vision and we kindly ask that you bear with us as we learn and adapt our platform to better serve gardeners, homeowners, and the Earth.

Can I request multiple gardeners?

Sure! Request to your heart's content.

Who's behind GardenerMatch?

We're three software builders working in climate tech. Our hearts are set on helping the biodiversity crisis through ecological restoration. After a bunch of research, we learned there aren't enough "plant people" out in the field converting lawns, improving soil health and creating habitats.
